Blackberry Torch

Blackberry Torch: half price claims half baked

August 17, 2010: 1:45 PM ET

I can't say how well the Blackberry Torch is selling, but Amazon prices are no indication.

AllthingsD nabbed an earlier PCWorld story this morning stating that the Blackberry Torch was in trouble because Amazon had discounted its price to $99.

I have no idea how successful the Torch has been since its launch, but Amazon (AMZN) discounts mean absolutely nothing. Amazon discounts every single phone it carries. Analysts at RBC Capital Markets and Stifel Nicolaus say 150,000 were sold launch weekend. That's a better estimate of success. Amazon? Notsomuch.

Just sticking with hot AT&T (T) phones, how about their best Android phone, the Samsung Captivate?  $200 at AT&T?  $49 at Amazon. HTC Aria?  $200 at AT&T, and free at Amazon. It isn't just Amazon either. Another new release, the Sony Xperia X10 is $80 at Wirefly, down from $250 launch at AT&T. It was released yesterday!

Wirefly price

Amazon discounts Verizon phones too.  How about the hot Motorola Droid X?  $179.  Droid 2 which was released just this week?  $149.  Same with the Incredible. More
