When did an All Things Digital become the keeper of Apple's event calendar?
We don't recall getting an invitation from Apple to an event on Oct. 4 or any other date, but that hasn't stopped analysts from alerting their clients exactly what to expect from the company that day. Jeffries' Peter Misek, for example, issued this note on Friday:
Apple holding press event on October 4.
Takeaway: We expect Apple (AAPL) to focus on iOS 5 and its cloud service capabilities. We also expect the announcement of an iPhone 5 (which could be called the "4S" as Apple appears to have vacillated on the name). We believe the iPhone 5 will have an A5 processor (the same as the iPad 2) a better camera, a slightly larger screen, and be slightly slimmer. We also expect the announcement of a lower-priced iPhone that will basically be a lower-cost 3GS. We expect carriers (including Sprint, ~50M subscribers, ) to launch the phones starting in mid-Oct. We had believed that T-Mobile (~34M subs) would also carry the iPhone 5 in CQ4 but now believe this could be delayed, possibly due to the pending AT&T acquisition. Finally, we also expect an iPhone launch at China Telecom (~108M subs) in CQ1.
"Sources close to the situation" say within a few weeks. History suggests earlier.
All Things Digital's John Paczkowski reports that Apple (AAPL) plans to unveil the new iPhone at a special event on Tuesday Oct. 4.
If so, when can we buy one?
Paczkowski's sources say "within a few weeks." But in a note to clients Tuesday, Ticonderoga's Brian White suggests that the lag time between unveiling and release is likely to be considerably MORE

iPhone 4S or 5? September or October? Everybody's guessing. Nobody really knows.
The next iPhone? Source: 9to5Mac
