Apple's App Store: 40 billion downloads and counting

Nearly half of those were in 2012 alone.

one-billion-apps-hero-20090418FORTUNE -- Apple took the wraps off some very big numbers this morning, announcing its App Store had reached a whopping 40 billion downloads. Nearly half of those downloads took place in 2012. The company also said it has some 500 million active accounts. Developers have been paid more than $7 billion by Apple for sales of some of the 775,000 apps available for iPhones, iPads and iPods.
