Apple likely to unveil "iPad Mini" at October 23 event [ALLTHINGSD]

As AllThingsD reported in August, Apple will hold a special event this month, at which it will showcase a new, smaller iPad. People familiar with Apple's plans tell us that the company will unveil the so-called "iPad mini" on Oct. 23 at an invitation-only event.

Mr Bezos made clear that the devices' success would depend on how many books and other media files were subsequently bought by their owners.

"We want to make money when people use our devices, not when people buy our devices," he told the BBC.

Ellison eyes fellow billionaire's AEG empire [REUTERS]

Ellison, who recently bought a Hawaiian island, is interested in a potential bid for Anschutz Entertainment Group, owned by fellow billionaire Phil Anschutz, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

Ellison's interest in AEG, whose owner wants initial bids in the $10 billion range, is preliminary, the sources said.

AMD: Third quarter unravels amid weak demand, excess inventory [ZDNET]

AMD said that its third quarter gross margin will be about 31 percent, well below the 44 percent projected in the last warning. Why? AMD is saddled with excess inventory. The chipmaker said that it will take an inventory write-down of about $100 million due to "lower anticipated future demand for certain products."
