FORTUNE -- It's easy to forget that Bill Gates announced the specs for Microsoft's (MSFT) first tablet computer in 2001, nearly a decade before Apple (AAPL) came out with the iPad. In Hollywood Tuesday, Steve Ballmer took the stage to unveil the successor to the Microsoft Tablet PC: The Surface, the first computer that Microsoft will actually build for itself. Prices and ship dates to be announced.
