Reports: iPad 2 event set for Mar. 2

Press invitations are expected to arrive later this week

Apple Inc.

The websites of two major newspaper reported Tuesday that Apple (AAPL) is set to unveil the second generation iPad one week from tomorrow.

"If you are thinking of buying an iPad, you may want to hold off a bit," wrote Miguel Helft on the New York Times' Bits blog.

"People with knowledge of the matter say that Apple will host an event on Wednesday, March 2 to showcase its new iPad... Reporters and other guests are likely to receive invitations in the next couple of days."

All Things Digital's Kara Swisher posted a similar report several hours earlier, citing multiple sources, also unnamed.

"Analysts expect the iPad 2 to be thinner than its predecessor and feature an improved display, as well as front-facing camera and Facetime video chat support," she wrote on her Boomtown website, which is owned by the Wall Street Journal. "Some reports suggest it will be powered by one of Qualcomm's multimode chips and will run on both GSM and CDMA-based networks around the world."

The reports came during a strange trading day that saw Apple's shares close down nearly $12 (3.41%) on reports of product delays -- some of which were later retracted -- for both the iPad 2 and the iPhone 5.
