Thursday night, just as a tornado -- or something like it -- was knocking down the trees that grow in our Brooklyn neighborhood, Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty issued a report to clients with a chart (copied above) graphing the damage done to the notebook PC market over the past eight or nine months. "Tablet cannibalization" -- chiefly by Apple's (AAPL) iPad -- is at least partially responsible, MORE

Heavy rains -- and a lively grey market -- may have dampened the turnout in Beijing

There were plenty of reporters but only about 100 customers queued up outside Apple's (AAPL) Beijing retail outlet at 8 a.m. Friday when sales of the iPad officially began in China.
The first customer, Han Ziwen, wearing a blue "I BUY IPAD NO 1" T-shirt, was mobbed by the MORE

Our toys and devices are amazing -- until they're obsolete. That's bad news for the planet, but good news for Electronic Recyclers International, a $50-million-in-revenue company that expects sales to double by 2012. Fresno-based ERI partners with the likes of Samsung and Best Buy (BBY) and is the largest electronics recycler in the U.S.

The company fears being shut out of smartphone handsets, first by Apple and now Google.
Apple (AAPL) started using Skyhook's location based services for their iOS Maps application June 2008 and dropped Skyhook April 2010 after it developed its own location-based mapping system.
That's one of the benefits of making your own hardware and software.
Unfortunately for Google (GOOG), who doesn't make hardware and also wants to supplant Skyhook's services with its own, MORE

Viewsonic's G tablet might be the sweet spot for those who are looking for an Android powered iPad alternative.

Laptop Magazine did a quick review of the $429 Viewsonic G 10.1 inch Android 2.2 tablet. From a hardware perspective it matches up pretty well with the iPad. The 1024x600 screen has a few fewer pixels but a wider aspect ratio which is great for watching movies. MORE

Sure Google is gaining on Apple, but not as fast as comScore's latest data suggest
I don't want to get into what Ben Bradlee, the Watergate-era editor of the Washington Post, used to call a "defensive crouch," but I've got a bone to pick with some of the headlines that came out of comScore's July 2010 mobile market share report, issued Wednesday afternoon. For example:
