Google News, Search and ads down in China?

July 29, 2010: 6:30 PM ET

Google's China site is reporting that the only major service running in China is Gmail.

Update: Google confirms that the Chinese government hasn't blocked Google, it is just an error in its reporting mechanism.

Because of the way we measure accessibility in China, it's possible that our machines could overestimate the level of blockage. That seems to be what happened last night when there was a relatively small blockage. It appears now that users in China are accessing our properties normally.

Along with their search engine Google's ads, News and mobile sites were listed as being down. The only service that Google monitors that is still functioning in the Mainland is Gmail. That's the first time this has happened since Google started stopped self-censoring itself im March.

Even Google's Web Search Suggests is now down and Google Images is at least partially being disfunctional.

The AP reports:

Google risked having its search engine cut off from the world's most populous country because it was no longer willing to let China's government control its search results. The two sides had appeared to reach a truce three weeks ago when China renewed Google's Internet license there.

Reuters reports that shares of Google were down 1.4 percent in after-hours trading to $478.00, while shares of Baidu Inc, the biggest search provider in China, rose 3.5 percent to $82.00.
