  • What's driving iPhone 4 sales?

It's a potent mix of new customers and old, says a Morgan Stanley analyst

    Photo: Apple Inc.

One of the unanswered questions about Apple's (AAPL) latest hit product is how many of the 600,000 iPhone 4s that were pre-sold on Tuesday were ordered by iPhone owners upgrading from their older models and how many by new customers who'd never owned an iPhone before.

  • The ugliest computer hacker

Out of what hole did Andrew Auernheimer and his gang of iPad hackers crawl?

    The iProphet. Source: iTunes Store

The hacker ethic has taken a long downward slide since Steve Levy traced it back to its roots at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in his classic  "Hackers, Heroes of the Computer Revolution" (1984).

But few have dragged it deeper in the mud than Andrew Auernheimer, 24, a member of the Goatse Security MORE

  • Speed Texting on Android: ThickButtons

ThickButtons is another way to increase your texting speed and accuracy on Android.

I wrote earlier today about Swype, a new way of texting.  Swype's method of sliding instead of tapping is pretty effective but requires a radically new way of thinking.

If you want something a lot easier (both to install and use) have a look at ThickButtons.  The idea is that it anticipates what combinations of letters you are likely to use and makes MORE

  • A Silicon Valley Star Tries Out the Real World

Retro is a good bet in the fashion world. Witness the leathery wave of Sperry Topsiders and L.L. Bean moccasins a la the 1980s washing over hipster enclaves across the nation. But going retro in the software business? Seems like a step in the wrong direction. Still Xobni, a Silicon Valley darling of a startup that offers software that organizes and streamlines Microsoft's Outlook email program is doing just that.

    Xobni MORE

  • AT&T's first little Android: HTC Aria

After a day with the Aria, I'm finding that it is a very capable, elegant smartphone.

AT&T is definitely walking the walk.  With the $129 w/plan HTC Aria, they are saying, "See! We carry real, up-to-date Android phones too!"  While that may be technically true, unfortunately, fate isn't going to be kind to this little guy.

(update: I know about the Android 1.5 Backflip, that doesn't count)

The Aria works well enough.  It MORE

  • Swype your way to faster texting

A new application allows world record speeds in text entry, now on Android devices.

Swype is a method of text input that allows you to enter text into a phone faster than traditional texting.  Rather than lifting your finger (or using two fingers) to enter text, you play connect the dots. It is quick to pick up (5 minutes and you are already faster) and, in a quick test, it has MORE

  • Apple took 600,000 pre-orders on Day 1

Meanwhile, it apologizes to frustrated iPhone customers and invites them to try again

    Photo: Apple Inc.

Someone finally apologized for the mess Apple and its carrier partners made of the iPhone 4 pre-order process Tuesday.

In statement released Wednesday, Apple (AAPL) announced that the number of pre-orders it took -- more than 600,000 -- was a one-day record. It was also more than it or its partners were prepared to handle, MORE

  • YouTube Cloud Editor: Is this Android's iMovie?

Today, YouTube revamped its video editing page to make it easier to edit YouTube videos.

As first spotted by the unofficial Google Operating System Blog, YouTube today sports a whole new Cloud video editing interface.

    Check it out here.

YouTube had previously tried a Flash-based editing system a few years ago called 'Remixer' which wasn't very reliable and therefore unpopular.

'Editor' isn't based in Flash (though the output will be played in Flash if MORE

  • AT&T suspends iPhone 4 pre-orders

Its employees are still cleaning up the mess created by Tuesday's server meltdown

Visitors to AT&T's (T) website trying to pre-order an iPhone 4 Wednesday morning got the message posted at right: "Pre-orders for iPhone temporarily suspended."

Behind the scenes, AT&T employees were alerted of the suspension by an internal memo that tells us more than we need to know about AT&T's operations, including the names of its servers. Here, via TheBoyGeniusReport, MORE
