I have to say I'm not so sure about this whole "ipad will replace laptops" theory. People will get it in their hands and learn what they can, and more importantly cannot, do with it. You can browse the internet with it, but not play flash content. No one really knows for sure how it will handle javascript either. I believe it will be the same as the iphone. A great competitor and a reason for other companies to step up, but I still see a lot of LG and Samsung phones, even on the AT&T network.

I bought a desktop (iMac) for the first time in years because the iPhone essentially filled my mobile needs. But I also use my iPhone when out and around in my house. I ordered an iPad (WiFi) because it's a better solution for using the internet in different rooms of my house. iPhone for outside, iPad for around my house, and an iMac to do serious work. I don't think I'm the only one ... as iMac sales are climbing significantly

Tablets are not a game-changer for now.. Although it might be a budding device made for a non-existential market. Just think, what it could replace in the future? (Your Coby, PMP device, Your LCD in your Car, Those vtech for the kids, etc) I won't buy an iPad until I see its 2ng gen coming, for the meantime, my eyes will be fixed to the two best alternatives to iPad (IMO) The notion ink adam and Microsoft Courier Tablet.

I can't wait to look at my adult movies on a bigger screen. My iPhone is killing my eyes. The ipad is saving me $ in rental fees and you don't even need a subcription to get good porn on the Internet nowadays thanks to the tubes out there.

The iPad is kind of expensive for what it can do. So far, it's not the best at any one thing and that maybe the selling point (good enough for every task). If the primary purpose is aimed at e-readers, then it has a lot of healthy e-reader competition and pricing pressure.

"me", It's weird that you would say, "I seriously don't understand why... the iPad" when many people - including myself - have explained EXACTLY why they ordered one and why they are willing to pay around $500 for the needs it would fulfill. Your reasons for saying that you wouldn't want one are fine with me. Don't get one - I don't have a problem understanding why it wouldn't fulfill your needs. But the fact is that my needs are not the same as yours. I don't want to do "real work" on it. The person who posted after me, Ram in Alamo has the same reasons to use it as I do and many people that posted before have their own valid reasons as well. It has nothing to do with trying to be a cool kid or Apple hype. Just because you don't want it for yourself, why do you "seriously" not understand why others would find it very handy?

I seriousy don't understand why people are pre-ordering the iPad. Seriously??? Don't get me wrong, I love Apple and what it's done with its revolutionary iPod and later iPhone in terms of user-friendliness, but the iPad seems just redundant. It seems like it's just a giant iTouch! Of coures, as I mentioned in my post about how I feel about the iPad (http://mein3.wordpress.com/2010/03/15/ipad-what-is-it-good-for-absolutely-nothing/), I'm not a techie, so perhaps my views on the iPad is merely from a functional standpoint. Nonetheless, I cannot imagine ever doing real work on it, like running a financial model, etc. without having a true keyboard. I agree that this device might simply be a way to increase Apple hype… A cooler looking device from Lenovo (IdeaPad U1) seems better suited as an "all-purpose" device than the iPad. Just my 2 cents.

Bought one on Friday night, 64 Wifi + 3g, plus accessories. I think it will be preferred by the older crowd, people with arthritis might find easier to use, also the techy older crowd. My 85 year old mother actually looked interested, she thought it would be something she could do. It isn't replacing my new MAC or our PC. We thought this was the solution to a problem we were going to have when we retired and traveled a lot. The IPAD with the 3G will let us go anywhere and stay connected. We are very concerned about AT&T, almost didn't do it because of lack of coverage. AT&T needs to fix or Verizon needs to be an option.

I'm very computer savvy & don't usually buy products on the bleeding edge, but I pre-ordered a 3g iPad on Friday because it is an additional tool that will ultimately save me money. It will not replace my laptop. But it will replace the need to take my expensive laptop on the road with me & the need for a $60/mo contract for 3g service for that laptop. It was that feature alone that sold me. I can use this device at home via my wireless service. When I'm on the road, I don't need heavy apps, but want easy internet access & email. I can get unlimited internet service on an as needed basis (no contract) for $30/mo and 250mb for $15/mo. At a minimum, I'll save $360 in one year, but more likely, I'll save about $540 for the first year - that almost pays for my iPad. What a deal!

By and large, Verizon is the higher-rated carrier in terms of customer service and network quality; Consumer Reports (and a number of others) has (have) said this consistently for years. I would love to have an iPhone, but my prior experiences with AT&T (as well as the current experiences of many friends) are keeping me with Verizon.

As an aside: what in the world is it that makes people on both sides of the fence become so disrespectful when conversations involve Apple? Apple makes great products and provides a highly integrated experience for a price. Lots of other companies make great products, too.

I'm tired of everyone saying the iPad doesn't do anything. Look, I don't think this is for everyone and I personally am a tech geek. I'm a Microsoft SQL DBA. I know my stuff. With that said I jumped on this. I am on-call often and remote into servers constantly. I have been known to remote into my machine and then from there remote into a server and kill a spid or something while in the movie theatre all on my iPhone. So seeing as I will be able to do that with an iPad is an immediate go for me. Hell I would love to more comfortably sit on the couch and surf the net too. This thing can do plenty. Thousands of new iPad apps will come with some serious functionality as well. Look at what they did with iWork and just imagine what is to come. I don't think everyone should run out and grab one but stop with the "this can't do anything" gripe. It can do anything "I" want it to do and "I" am all that matters when it comes to parting with my money. Will the slate be better? Nope, Windows 7 isn't a mobile OS. The Adam is what everyone needs to look at. So far imo it's the only competitor because of the Android OS. It's built for touch. Windows has failed for years with the tablet. These mobile OS's will succeed. I'm looking forward to the competition. In the mean time I will read all about it on my iPad.

Thats not true at all.

The majority of everyday users of desktops, laptops and netbooks use those devices for accessing the web and emails and personal use like music, movies and photos along with some minor word processing or office tasks.

The iPad is exactly supposed to replace the desktop/laptop/netbook for *those* users because it does exactly what they bought those other devices for...accessing the web, doing emails and music and photos.

The iPad will kill the desktop/netbook/laptop markets in less then 2 years because the majority of everyday average users (which is the majority of America) do not need the power of a desktop or laptop.

Desktops will still exist but for the professional markets and HC gamers. Laptops will also but both will take major hits. Netbooks will take the biggest and disappear completely.

I already know of many people that have said that after they get an iPad, they cannot see themselves ever again owning a laptop or desktop because they wont need to anymore along with the personal space, desk space, no more wires, etc.

I think a lot of you are missing the big picture here of what this device is about to do to the home pc market and laptop market. Even Apple knows that the future is in the portable market. Im sure they are preparring for the end of the iMac and MacBook lines (not their pro lines though)

And the major Flash / Silvercrap sites like Hulu and Netflix are going to FIX their sites so that their content can also run on the iPhone and iPad. and they are doing it soon.

The iPad may be a good alternative to ebook reader, but I won't buy until the following are added:

- Multitasking support (No excuse not to be able to run multiple apps at the same time on a full-sized tablet with 1 GHz processor)
- Flash support (Flash is supported across web browsers, and should be supported on the iPad and iPhone).
- USB or SD card port for importing pictures and adding storage; though, Apple wants to lock-down the device and sell higher memory versions that have a difference in price that are almost pure profit for Apple

I had an iphone for a month. only one month but I loved it! It totally opened my eyes. Now I understand the power of an app. there are soooo many useful apps and tools to use. The free flashcards app me study material I needed for my profession. in all the browsing I did I only came accross one website that I couldn't pull up and that was Hyundai's. Don't get me wrong they are a great company that has made huge improvements since their early years. Now they just need to get rid of their flash based website. for all you nay sayers, fine don't get anything apple, in a few years other comanies might come out with something almost as good. we all know they have been trying as hard as they can but just can't seem to do it.
