iPhone owners 10 times more likely to search the web

That's the take-home message of the survey released Tuesday by M:Metrics on how the usage patterns of iPhone owners compare with those of competing mobile devices. Plenty of smartphones offer access to the web, but most of them make you walk barefoot over coals to get there.

Apple's (AAPL) iPhone doesn't, and the results speak for themselves. Based on interviews with more than 30,000 Americans, M:Metrics found that iPhone users were more than six times more likely than owners of other mobile devices to read news and information via a browser, nearly ten times more likely to search the web and nearly 12 times more likely to blog or visit a social network.

"The iPhone has certainly delivered on its hype," said Mark Donovan, senior analyst, M:Metrics.

The results of his survey are summarized in the chart below. Note that "Smartphone" includes the iPhone, which tends to pull the category's numbers up. See M:Mobile's press release here for more detail.
